Water Problems

Hard Water

It’s one of the most common water problems in northeast Iowa β€” and one of the most damaging. Here’s what hard water is doing to your home, and how to stop it.

What Is Hard Water?

Minerals Your Water Picks Up Along the Way

As water moves through the ground, it collects dissolved calcium and magnesium from rocks and soil. By the time it reaches your tap, it carries those minerals with it. That’s hard water.

Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG). Anything above 7 GPG is considered hard β€” and much of northeast Iowa’s water comes in well above that, particularly from private wells.

The minerals themselves aren’t a health risk. But the damage they do to your home, your appliances, and your skin and hair is very real.

Water Hardness Scale
0–3 GPG Soft
4–7 GPG Moderately Hard
8–12 GPG Hard
13+ GPG Very Hard
Many northeast Iowa wells test between 15–30 GPG
The Hidden Damage

What Hard Water Does to Your Home

Scale buildup is slow and silent β€” but it’s working against you every single day.

🚿

Pipes & Plumbing

Minerals accumulate inside pipes over time, gradually narrowing the opening and reducing water flow. In severe cases, pipes can become completely blocked β€” requiring costly replacement.

🫧

Water Heater

Scale settles on the heating element and tank walls, forcing your water heater to work harder to heat the same amount of water. Studies show hard water can cut water heater efficiency by up to 30% and shorten its lifespan significantly.

🍽️

Dishes & Glassware

That cloudy film on glasses and dishes that won’t wash off? That’s mineral residue left behind when hard water evaporates. It’s not dirt β€” it’s scale, and your dishwasher can’t remove it.

πŸ‘•

Laundry

Hard water makes it harder for detergent to lather and rinse cleanly. Clothes come out stiff, dull, and wearing out faster than they should. Whites turn gray. Colors fade prematurely.

🚿

Fixtures & Surfaces

White crusty buildup around faucets, showerheads, and drains. Soap scum that clings to shower walls and tub surfaces. Stains that come back no matter how often you clean.

🍳

Appliances

Dishwashers, washing machines, coffee makers, ice makers β€” any appliance that uses water is susceptible. Scale buildup wears out pumps, clogs valves, and burns out heating elements well ahead of schedule.

Personal Impact

What Hard Water Does to Your Family

The effects aren’t just on your home β€” they show up on your skin, your hair, and your daily comfort.

🧴

Dry, Itchy Skin

Minerals in hard water interfere with your skin’s natural moisture balance. Many people notice persistent dryness, irritation, or eczema flare-ups that improve dramatically after switching to soft water.

πŸ’‡

Dull, Brittle Hair

Hard water leaves a mineral film on hair that makes it feel rough, look dull, and become harder to manage. Color-treated hair fades faster. Scalp dryness and irritation are common complaints.

🫧

Soap That Won’t Lather

Calcium and magnesium react with soap and shampoo, reducing lather and leaving a sticky residue on skin. You end up using more product to get the same result β€” and never quite feeling clean.

πŸ‘Ά

Especially Hard on Kids

Children’s skin is more sensitive to the drying effects of hard water. Families often notice significant improvement in eczema and dry skin conditions after installing a water softener.

Signs to Watch For

Hard water hides in plain sight

You might not know you have hard water until the damage is already done. Here are the telltale signs to look for around your home:

White or yellowish crust around faucets and drains
Cloudy spots on glassware after washing
Soap scum that builds up quickly in the shower
Laundry that feels stiff or looks dingy
Skin that feels dry or tight after showering
Low water pressure that seems to be getting worse
Water heater that runs longer than it used to

The Solution

Water Softeners β€” The Gold Standard Fix

A water softener is the most effective and proven solution for hard water. Here’s how it works and which system is right for your home.

How a Water Softener Works

Water softeners use a process called ion exchange. Hard water passes through a tank of resin beads that are charged with sodium ions. As the water flows through, the resin beads grab the calcium and magnesium minerals and release sodium in their place β€” leaving you with soft, mineral-free water throughout your home.

The resin beads periodically regenerate using a salt brine solution, flushing the captured minerals down the drain and recharging for the next cycle.
